The Way Out

by Nicole Westerhouse
(Indianapolis, IN)

I know you worry
I know you're scared to death
That I can't make it on my own
But don't you know you showed me
All the different ways
To climb myself out of a hole

So even if I'm digging
Deeper and deeper
And the slopes keep getting
Steeper and steeper

I'll be alright
I promise you that I can still see the light
And that's enough to hold on to
You told me once the only way out is through
So with these hands of mine
I will try to find my way out
And maybe someday
I'll find a way to make you proud

I know you're tired
Cause I keep making the same mistakes
And we both know I'm a liar
But you can honestly believe me when I say

I'll make it through
This fire, this fire
As the smoke is rising
Higher and higher

I'll be okay
I see a better world beyond the flames
And that's enough to hold on to
You told me once the only way out is through
So with these legs of mine
I will try to run my way out
After all I've done
How could I make you proud?

Don't you know I hear every word you say
Even when you think I'm not listening
I am
I'm just doing the best I can

Is that alright?
If I promise I still see the light
And is that okay?
I think I've found my way through the flames
And that's enough to hold on to
You told me once the only way out is through
I think I understand
So you can let go of my hand
I can find my own way out
And with some time
I hope to find
A way to make you proud
