Sheryl Diane at Seamonster Lounge
Sheryl Diane Shumsky: born in Montana, moved west in ?89 after some formative years in Bozeman, DJ-ing at college radio station, KGLT and thereby baptizing herself in all manner of music. She cites her early influences as primarily Brit rock: XTC, Kate Bush and Elvis Costello, Eurythmics, as well as American jazz/soul: Minnie Ripperton, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Peggy Lee and keyboardists; Ray Manzarek, Elton John, Donald Fagen, Carol King, Christine McVie, Kate Bush, Steve Nieve and Thelonious Monk.
As a descendant of 4 generations of maternal piano players, Sheryl was destined to wield the light-weight hammers and divide her time between mothering and the pursuit of a music career. She graduated from Fairhaven College with a self-designed degree, Aural Media, ('91); relocated to Seattle ('92); and began performing singer-songwriter solo spots. Eventually she developed a band (The Figs '98) that although short-lived, had some very good gigs. Most notably they participated in the comedy series, Carlotta's Late Night Wing Ding during the highest frivolousness of that show which earned the Wing Ding accolades from Seattle Weekly.
After the band dispersed, Sheryl went on to produce a long running women's songwriter series, (Wine, Women & Chocolate '00-'05). She finally left the day-job behind to become a sought-after piano teacher in 2000. All while raising offspring with Joe "Bass" Skyward (most known for his work with Jeremy Enigk and previously, The Posies, Sky Cries Mary, The Walkabouts, Pretty Mary Sunshine). In the ensuing years while Joe toured extensively, she remained devoted to raising their kids and developed a first recording (Blackberry Love EP '04).
Sheryl's currently working on a concept retro soul/americana album, Dream Carnival. The band is Sheryl Diane, keyboard; Woogie D, drums; and a bunch of musicians she recruited from a bowling alley, hence the project code name - Bowling With Shumpy! As the recording progresses the newly finished tracks will be posted on the web for immediate download.
