"Ole Gullah Woman"

by David Cooper
(Conway S.C. USA)

As I sit on the bank
Of the ole Santee river
Got my toes in the sand
Warm sun on my face
Watching shrimping boats pass
Making my bobber dance
Bringing back memories
Of my childhood days

Ole Gullah woman
My low country momma
Your sea island Geechee
Whispers my name
I see your face
Dancing on the water
Hypnotized by my bobber
Ole Gullah woman

Spent my summer days
On the banks of this river
While my ole mammy
Sat under an oak
Weaving her sweet grass baskets
She sold to the tourist
That stopped by her stand
On the Charleston road
