Funny Canadian Songwriter/Producer/Playwright ~ Alexandra Lean

Alexandra Lean is a Toronto-based songwriter/producer and playwright who writes comedic musical works for the underdogs who never quite fit in.

In 2013, Alexandra wrote and produced her first 90-minute musical, Nobody’s Idol, at the Toronto Fringe Festival. The well-received musical is about the lengths people will go for the allure of fame.

She earned her undergradutate degree at Brock University in Theatre. While there, she served as president of the student-run organization Brock Improv and was the recipient of the F. Janet Dolman Prize for Excellence in Playwriting. She earned a post-graduate certificate from Humber College in Television: Writing and Producing.

Alexandra's work is informed by her love of improv comedy. In 2008, she studied the art of longform improvisation at i.O. Chicago and Upright Citizens Brigade in New York City. From there, she improvised with Toronto’s Impatient Theatre Co. and had a fabulous time as part of the Harold team Nakatomi Protocol.

For 2 years, this team performed regularly in Toronto and at festival like NYC’s Del Close Marathon, North Carolina’s Comedy Arts Festival and Atlanta’s Combustion Festival. Alexandra also participated in the conservatory at The Second City Training Centre in Toronto. She went on to become managing director of an improv theatre venture that brought Toronto its first taste of acclaimed improvisers TJ Jagadowsky and David Pasquesi, otherwise known as TJ & Dave. In 2015, Alex went back to Chicago for one more improv intensive this time at The Annoyance Theatre run by Mick Napier.

She is currently working on 3 projects. 1) A concept album centered around fictitious pop star called Violet Love ~ Greatest Hits. 2) A musical for middle schools that raises awareness about anxiety disorders, called Mimi and the Music. 3) A comedic play called Character Assassination: A Writer's Guide to Killing Your Literary Babies.
