Fast Lane

by Rebecca
(Massachusetts)

If this was a fairy tale I’d start with ‘Onceuponatime’
But that’s not how this goes

Running through the fast lane, jumping off of planes
Running through the fast lane, tears falling on a train

“Don’t you care? Want to get far?”
I don’t want to get far, I just want to jump high
Running through the fast lane, screaming out of cars

“Onceuponatime” what a silly joke.

Tears are rushing by, smoke is rising high
Blood is rushing down my head
My dress is turning red

Running through the fast lane
Flowers in my hair
Dirt is on my face, but I don’t really care

Because the stars are out, the moon is here
I reach out my hands, my fingers are stretched out wide
I’m just another shadow silhouetted against the sky

And then I JUMP, I FLY, I SOAR, I LEAP, I SINK, I CRY
I don’t know why I can’t stand it all
I don’t know why I chose to fall
But I’m running through the fast lane
Jumping off of trains, screaming out of cars
Falling out of planes
