Dusk to Dawn

by Adam Kellett
(Rising Sun, Maryland)

reflections are a blur
I use to see the picture
now it's all become noise
my flashbulb memory has me in anchors
and I squirm at the tethers
I'm a servant to my imagination
it seems so familiar
to drown beside this creature
as it waits for me to reach the surface

I hold my breath
struggling to find my initiative
I found satisfaction in the world
I made inside my head
I found a friend in my lonely corner
so lets build it up
Dress it all anew
Because I need a change of scenery once in a while

The chains, they shake
they dance around me like sirens
there song so tempting
The water gets darker
as I force my hand
a sudden realization bargains its way
I was blind, I was naive.
You reap what you sow
And darling, my friends
I can play grim reaper

reflections are a blur
I use to see the picture
now it's all become noise
my flashbulb memory has me in anchors
and I squirm at the tethers
I'm a servant to my imagination
it seems so familiar
to drown beside this creature
as it waits for me to reach the surface

I found the mirror
And shattered the glass
Left the pieces in the farthest confines of my mind
I don't need
A mind doctor so speak emotions with
The emotions I know I have
Self medication was never enticing to me

I turned an epiphany into practice
elated my serenity
I put face to the demon in the water
Watched as it grew white wings
And as I flew I never felt more alive
