Durango 2008 Memories of Asheville, North Carolina

...My favorite presentation was by Chuck Cannon. I told him afterwards that some of his comments touched me deeply and that I learned a lot from his talk. One thing he said that stood out was "Turn off the TV." That makes sense. My favorite performer was Malcolm Holcombe. With him it wasn't about the lyrics, it was the performance. This guy had me wondering if he was sick, hungover, crazy or a combination of all three and this was before he even played. I have never seen such an outrageous performance. It would be hard to describe but I'll tell you this, if I ever get a chance to see him again I won't miss it. Shawn Mullins is from Georgia as I am and we are from neighboring towns. As always I was a bit intimidated to approach a big-name star but I spoke to him and we talked for ten minutes or so. You'll find that famous performers are approachable and friendly and love to tell their stories...This was a very positive experience and I plan to return as long as they continue to host a Durango East Festival.
