'Clancy's Song/Play Me Home'
by Steve Phelps
Clancy was a great friend of mine I met at Church many years ago
He loved them old time Gospel songs, and never missed a chance of sayin' so
He'd say 'Steve, the way you play them Gospels,I could listen to ya night and day
And out of all them songs I like so much,my favorite is 'I'll Fly Away'.
Not long ago,Clancy told me 'Steve I got some news, and for me it ain't none too good
'Seems the doctors think I am dying, they done everything they could
But don't feel bad for me,I'm in good hands, cause I took the Savior as my own
Only thing I ask is when my time comes, please be there to play me home.'
'Bout a week later I got the call nobody wants to hear
Lady said 'Clancy died late the night before, and he was a grinnin' from ear to ear
But he said something strange there toward the end,and I figure if anyone did, you'd know
What Clancy meant when he said 'Be sure to tell Steve to play old Clancy home'.
When we got to where Clancy was to be honored,I thought it a sad sight to see
The only ones in that house of worship was Clancy, the preacher,Ms.Taylor(my guitar) and me
So after the preacher said a prayer and a sermon about us never walking alone
In spite of that Church being empty,me and Ms.Taylor got up and played old Clancy home
Amazing Grace, how Sweet the sound/That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found/was blind but now I see
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,let me hide myself in thee
Then I paused and said 'now Clancy, don't go thinking we are done here today
I saved your favorite song for last,to send you on your way!!!!!!!!!'
I then finish the song with the first full verse of Clancy's favorite song,'I'll Fly Away'.
GOD SPEED CLANCY MY FRIEND,AMEN!!!!!!!!
